National Network for the Protection of Journalists and Communicators
The National Network for the Protection of Journalists and Communicators is an initiative that brings together civil society organizations, communicators and journalists, communication collectives, social movements, unions, and other entities from all over Brazil in defense of freedom of expression and the safety of these professionals.
Led by the organizations Instituto Vladimir Herzog and Article 19, the Network aims to combat the advancement of attacks and threats to freedom of expression by forwarding complaints, monitoring received cases, and providing training and strategies to ensure the safety of communicators and journalists, who are essential for the democratic functioning of society.
The project’s guidelines are established and revised in periodic national meetings, which bring together members of the Network and representatives of civil society organizations, media collectives, and human rights defense initiatives.
In addition to the coordination of Instituto Vladimir Herzog and Article 19, the Network is supported by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Intervozes – Brazil Collective for Social Communication. The project is also made possible by partnerships, private sector funders, and parliamentary amendments.
